How to get motivated when you are not

March 7, 2011 By Jim Raffel

image of take a napAre you wondering how to get motivated when you are not?

Take a nap.

Run to the coffee shop and grab a cup of coffee.

Go for a run.

But – and here’s the key part in how to get motivated – set a hard stop time for the activity you are choosing to do, instead of what you feel like you should be doing.

During a good week, I sneak out in the middle of the day for a hike that takes about an hour. I try and take that hike when I’m feeling overwhelmed and not being productive.

I almost always return from that hike with a clear head and a list of three things in my head to tackle by the end of the day.

So, get motivated by cutting yourself some slack, clearing your head with a healthy activity and returning to the work (hopefully within an hour).

These are some ways how I get motivated, but your mileage may vary. Do you have similar ideas you’d like to share?

Thank you Jim for being such a motivator to so many! Now I’m off for a long walk with my fur babies to get that motivation flowing.
