I’ll admit I am excited but I really don’t know what to expect. By and large printing industry trade shows and conferences have been a complete disappointment to me over the last several years.
Social Media is a relatively young and vibrant industry. I’d say it is a toddler still in diapers. I pulled a lot of strings to be at #unGeeked starting tomorrow and I think I finally understand what was driving me.
A HUGE part of my attendance is to support the Milwaukee social media community which is nothing short of amazing. Beyond that I see an opportunity to grow my skills and share some of my thoughts about B2B use of social media. The B2B social media trenches are interesting and very different than B2C in my opinion.
So, I go with an open mind, open eyes, open ears and a mostly closed mouth. I’m going to learn. I have 2 ears 2 eyes and 1 mouth that means I should be talking 20% of the time or less. That’s my plan and I’m sticking to it.
The printing industry needs to embrace social media. I’m going to be looking for clues how to start making that happen faster. There are clearly pockets in my industry that have accepted and embraced social media and community. Just not enough and not fast enough.
Social media and community speed up and simplify the dissemination of information. As 20+ year veteran of the printing industry I know we can benefit from faster more efficient communication. Our trade associations are by and large letting the industry down big-time. Maybe the answer to that problem lies in social media and community.
