This weekend has been brought to you by Twitter

December 5, 2010 By Jim Raffel

Friday evening we attended the Translator holiday party. Twelve months ago I did not know Mark Fairbanks or Cynthia Thomas (The Translators). I met Cindi and Mark online in that strange and wonderful place we call The Twitter. I can say the same of many other party attendees who I know today only because of social media.

Yesterday we attended the second meeting of Tea Club (or #TeaClub for those who understand hash tags) at The Steaming Cup in downtown Waukesha. My wife and a few other Tea devotees organized Tea Club and plan the gatherings mostly via Twitter. Kerry (one of The Steaming Cup’s owners) was thrilled to have a crowd (about 12 of us) visiting because of Social Media. We talked to him about Twitter and he shared his extensive “hobbyist” knowledge of tea with us.

Today we will watch the Green Bay Packers football game with friends (we actually knew before Twitter but keep in better touch with because of Twitter) at Replay Sports Bar that we only know about because of Twitter.

Many of us tend to say Twitter is just a tool. Well, yes it is but a very powerful tool when operated properly. There is a reason that both Bing and Google are acknowledging that mentions on social sites like Twitter and Facebook are part of search engine relevance algorithms.

What did you do this weekend and what communications tools did you utilize to make the arrangements?

MilwaukeeDevHouse5 was held on Friday night, and about 25-30 people showed up (and a few more joined is remotely online) to work on various projects, hack on interesting things, and just hang out and have fun. We sometimes call it “Party with Laptops”

I also made a fun time lapse video of the event: http://web414.com/node/1013

I ran into Tracy Apps before she headed over there. I may have to come visit next time you hold a DevHouse.

It was great to see you, your wife and other tweeters at #TeaClub. On Thursday, my wife and I attended the first #MKEfoodies tweetup at Roots. It was great and I loved meeting other food bloggers.

So, you attended two #hashtags in 3 days – not bad Dan not bad at all 😉 Good to see you two as well.
