WordPress and MAMP

by JimRaffel on September 23, 2011

Following are the slides from my presentation last night at the Milwaukee WordPress Meetup. Without the context of my talk and the question and answer session that followed, they lack context but nonetheless here they are. The goal of the presentation is being able to do WordPress development on your standalone machine without an internet connection.

How to speak more by hustling more

by JimRaffel on August 8, 2011

It’s been a week since we returned form WordCamp Chicago where Shelby Sapusek and I launched the public speaking arm of the She Said, He Said project. In that week, people have begun reaching out to us for help with social media and offering opportunities to speak. So how did we get here?

Landing speaking gigs is no accident

While She Said, He Said grew organically, securing speaking gigs never happens by accident. For example, to secure the WordCamp Chicago gig, we attended the WordPress Milwaukee Meetup so we could meet Heather Acton whom we knew was one of the WordCamp Chicago organizers. Yes, we still filled out the speaking proposal which was required to speak at a WordCamp. But showing up to meet one of the event organizers face-to-face? That’s hustling.

We are completing lots of speaking proposals for events like BlogWorld, PubCon and other WordCamps. Don’t expect the conferences to come find you, you need to go find them. Then, you need to become active in the communities the event organizers manage. It’s no accident Shelby has participated in every BlogWorld Twitter chat since we submitted our proposal.

Will we land every gig we apply for? While I hope so, the answer is probably not. Landing speaking gigs is like any other form of sales. It’s a numbers game. Also, like any other form of sales, it’s competitive. I love that I’ve been selling for three decades. It gives us an edge. However, you can have the real edge too. Hustle. Keep your brand in front of people. Apply, apply and then apply some more. Then, participate in places the event organizers will notice you. Remember your participation is helping them. We all like to help those who have helped us.

Apply to the biggest events

While you may not land them in the beginning, there is another benefit. When I applied to speak at BlogWorld last year, I spent a week making sure the application was perfect. I got turned down. I then used the content from that application to land a series of smaller gigs. By applying to a big event, you’ll force yourself to rise to another level when completing the application process.

Be willing to commit 12 to 18 months of your life to launching a speaking career. Then get outside your comfort zone, think big and hustle!

At the end of this post, you’ll find the topics for tonight’s #shehechat over on Twitter at 8 p.m. CST. Before we get to those, I’m going to share some thoughts on why I’m so excited that Shelby and I are taking “She Said, He Said” to the next level by doing a live version [...]

No, this is not a post about making a living as a public speaker or even using your public speaking career as a lead generation machine. Instead, I’m going to share with you how public speaking experience prepared me become a better presenter in sales situations. This is about the ability to organize your thoughts [...]

Trust your team, grow your business

I have a confession to make – I’m a control freak. But by growing the team I work with over the last year, I’m learning to let go. We’ve added some quality folks to the team and it’s a whole lot easier to let go of responsibility when you are putting it in capable hands. [...]

Preparation is everything when it comes to public speaking. As I look ahead at my April public speaking schedule it’s clear I have plenty of preparing to do. I’ll be presenting seven different programs (some of them multiple times). We’ve all seen that guy who reads the script or looks at and then reads his [...]

Public Speaking in 2011

January 18, 2011

Tomorrow morning, I’ll head out on a trip that includes my first public speaking event of the year. I’m reminded that I wrote a fair amount on the topic of public speaking last year. There was a good reason for that as I had set a goal (one I attained) to speak 12 times in [...]

The value of public speaking

December 20, 2010

Blogging and public speaking are closely related pursuits so it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that the value derived from each is similar. When you write a blog post, over time you get to share your story with dozens, hundreds or even thousands of people who find their way to your post and read it. [...]

Your public speaking wardrobe

December 8, 2010

The short version: Be comfortable in your chosen public speaking wardrobe whatever that is. The closing session of BlogWorld this year included many speakers but as I think back the clothing of two stands out. Penn Jillette was dressed in jeans and a damn nice casual dress shirt. The clothes fit the man. Just as [...]
