Four effective tools to plan and organize

by JimRaffel on January 7, 2011

image of four effective tools for organization and planningIf you are like me, you struggle with planning and organizing. I keep searching for the perfect combination of tools to match my scattered brain. While the following combination may not be perfect, I feel it’s going to be the right mix to make 2011 my best year ever.

My Quartet of Tools

1. Notebook (Yes, I prefer Moleskine) – Here, I can write and review lists and notes anytime, anywhere. A notebook works even during an airplane ascent or descent when all the fantastic electronic tools I utilize must be shut down.

2. A pack of Post-It notes – I use these primarily to write the day’s three most important tasks on and then I stick it to the current page of the notebook. A list of 10, 20 or even 30 items can be daunting. Most of us can trudge through a list of three in a day.

3. Things – This is a great little app for my MacBook. This little gem lets me organize small projects and record long-term to-do items. Most of my personal and side projects are managed here. In addition, some of my ColorMetrix projects start here and then make the leap to Basecamp once collaboration is required. Because Things is an app on my computer, I can utilize it without an internet connection, which is another plus when working at 30,000 feet.

4. Basecamp from 37signals – In the last few weeks, I have moved several projects from paper, Google Docs, and Things to Basecamp. I can’t rave enough about how well this tool can organize a project and allow collaboration. I guess the test will be to see if I am still using it 12 months from today. For $25/month, I can manage as many as 25 concurrent projects with many collaborators and lots of space to store project documents. There is a free version for managing a single project at a time and I worked with that several times over the last few years before making the leap to the paid version. I’m glad I took the plunge for the paid subscription. It’s worth it.

That’s what works for me. How about you? What tools get planning and organization done for you?

What’s your next dream?

by JimRaffel on October 24, 2010

what's your next big dreamThe dream you are working on now is already reality or at least becoming so.

What’s next? I’m not suggesting you lose focus but it might be time to look forward to what’s next.

I’ve worked the better part of two years to make one of my dreams come true. I’m now at the point where the dream is reality and taking on a life of it’s own. My work is by no means done and the project will require care and feeding for years to come. Nonetheless, I find myself wondering what I want to do next.

I’ll probably grab my Moleskine notebook and Pul mechanical pencil and do some visual thinking to figure this out.

I know one thing for sure, I’m dreaming really big this time. Because of the amazing network I’ve become part of I can.

What’s you take? When is it time to start dreaming the next big dream?

Planning the Social Media Way

May 22, 2010

Planning sales “events” with social media while similar to the traditional sales model is not the same. During the #unGeeked conference last week I got a glimpse of the HubSpot social media sales funnel. Sales will always be about the funnel. What changes is how the funnel gets filled and in my case how the [...]

Internal Mastermind Group Provides Answers

March 21, 2010

When faced with a tough decision, I often ask myself What would _________ do in this situation? Or better yet I pull together a group or four or five really smart people in my head to form an internal mastermind group. I first read about the internal mastermind concept in Napoleon Hill’s classic Think and [...]

Social Media 101 (by Chris Brogan) Book Review

March 20, 2010

I just finished reading Chris Borgan’s Social Media 101. This is a must have book for anyone who has a blog, a web-site, a Twitter account or even just an email account on the internet. Chris covers it all. It’s been a long time since I used this many post-it page markers and highlighter ink [...]

#73: From the desk of Jim Raffel

December 12, 2008

These troubled economic times have transformed many of us in the Graphic Arts into senior level executives. What I mean is that we must all manage a long list of multiple priorities on a daily basis. Each and every day we are asked to get more done with fewer resources of every type. So, success [...]
