How to get motivated when you are not

by JimRaffel on March 7, 2011

image of take a napAre you wondering how to get motivated when you are not?

Take a nap.

Run to the coffee shop and grab a cup of coffee.

Go for a run.

But – and here’s the key part in how to get motivated – set a hard stop time for the activity you are choosing to do, instead of what you feel like you should be doing.

During a good week, I sneak out in the middle of the day for a hike that takes about an hour. I try and take that hike when I’m feeling overwhelmed and not being productive.

I almost always return from that hike with a clear head and a list of three things in my head to tackle by the end of the day.

So, get motivated by cutting yourself some slack, clearing your head with a healthy activity and returning to the work (hopefully within an hour).

These are some ways how I get motivated, but your mileage may vary. Do you have similar ideas you’d like to share?

Embrace change

by JimRaffel on October 10, 2010

Change is a constant – right?

Sometimes change affects you positively and other times negatively.

Sometimes you accept change willingly and other times, not so much.

I met a man this week who does not seem to accept change willingly but he does approach it positively. He argued and fought with a large group of us but not by bitching, moaning and complaining. Instead, my new friend challenged all of us to expose the positive in the change that had been put in place.

I’m not even sure he realized what he was doing. I learned from him that you don’t have to love the change. The faster you find something positive in the change, however, the more likely you are to not let the change slow you down.

How do you feel about change?

Be there for others

October 3, 2010

You know that feeling you get when you smile at a person and they smile back? There’s nothing quite like it is there? Most of the time a simple act like a smile is all it takes to be there for others. A friend posts a message on Twitter making it clear they are having [...]

Focus on you

September 25, 2010

Why? Because you can’t change anyone else. Don’t be jealous. You don’t want to be like them. You want to be like you. Find your own way. Your unique approach to the world is what people find interesting. You’re doing it right. Yes, you are and keep the focus on you by helping others. When [...]

The Customer Testimonial

September 21, 2010

The unsolicited customer testimonial is both social capital and brand equity. Two of the most valuable forms of capital, that while not economic, can be leveraged to achieve significant economic gains. Getting unsolicited customer testimonials It’s really easier than you think. When you are doing good work people will recognize that fact. All the testimonials [...]

Delivering the Goods, at a Fair Price

September 6, 2010

My friend Cindy shared the following on Twitter recently. What does best really mean? Obviously I already tipped my hand in the title of this post. Clearly what Cindy does is deliver the goods at a fair price. That price may not be the lowest and based upon Cindy’s track record I’m guessing it’s not. [...]

Know what you have the power to own

September 5, 2010

This is not a post about material possessions. It’s about me not trying to fix you and you not trying to fix me. Know those times when I’m really tired, cranky, hungry, withdrawn? Yes, you know what I’m taking about because it happens to you too. Here’s the deal. Think about how you are feeling [...]

Patience, as learned by blogging

September 2, 2010

There was a time not so long ago, when I could not wait to click publish on a new post. Sometimes I still feel that urge but I know from experience that by waiting a week or so the post will only become better. Cooling off time. First, I edit the post with fresh eyes [...]

Moving a teenager to college

September 1, 2010

I’m a big ball of mush sometimes. No, really I am. Normally when there is no one looking, like earlier this evening. I had just left my oldest child’s first home that is not a home we had made for her. For her second year of college, she has moved away (25 whole miles) into [...]
