The #MobileDiva Sara Santiago wrapped up day two of #unGeeked with an awesome presentation/question and answer session about penetrating the mobile space.
A few months ago Sara convinced me to add a mobile version of this site. It’s not that hard to do in WordPress and now 8% of my site traffic is looking at the mobile version of the site. Funny thing, in the few months since I installed the mobile theme, I had not even looked at my mobile stats. So, now I’m thinking to my self holly shit Sara is awesome!
For real, stop right now and ask what your mobile strategy is. Don’t have one. Then, stop and ask yourself why not? Seriously folks it’s 2010 and damn near 100% of humans have a cell phone. Many of that 100% have no other way to access the internet. Stop trying to decide how people get to view your content and start making it easy for them to view it anytime anywhere.
A free mobile theme is a good first step. That’s all it is a first step. If your mobile penetration is going to be good for anything you are going to need to go beyond that. Perhaps not for a blog but any site with calls to action will need custom tailored mobile versions of the site. At least Sara thinks so and remember she’s awesome.
You’re full of it Jim, we need a mobile site like we need a Twitter account. OK, come back and read this post next year when 30 or 40% of my traffic is mobile. It’s growing that fast. I may have heard this part wrong and maybe Sara will come fix my error in the comments. (This post better SEO well and have awesome comments)
I’m joking around here but about a serious subject. Ignore the mobile space at your own risk of disappearing from the face of the earth. I sort of got it before Sara’s talk yesterday day. Now, I really get it. ColorMetrix.com will at some future date (not so far off) need a true mobile version of the site (not the current WordPress theme). Why? because we have calls to action there. Opportunities to purchase products and services and or fill out information forms. Those things REQUIRE mobile optimization. I’m pretty sure Roll Mobile will be the single bidder on that project. (‘specially with the 50% discount they give for blogging about them)
Oh wow 400 words already – I need to wrap up now. Two 16 hour days of #unGeeked has made a bit punchy and snarky. I truly hope that does not take away from the import message of this post.
I feel the mobile space is super important. As I am just beginning to understand this space I’d love to hear what you think in the comments about mobile penetration.
