63-3 GE Live: In Memory Of

I could not even bring myself to write about the day it was yesterday. While I know that is disrespectful to those who lost so much and those who made the ultimate sacrifice I just could not do it. In the days and months that followed 9/11/2001 ColorMetrix almost ceased to exist. As most of us remember “the day” fell right at the end of Print ‘01 and all the hopes and dreams of many of us got crushed that day along with the twin towers and the pentagon.

For the “idiots” on Michigan Ave last night protesting the day with conspiracy theory sign…I am so happy you live in a country where you can do so. Go to Iran and try the same protest against you own government….idiots, it’s all I can think to say.

Oh, as for GraphExpo…There is really nothing new here this year, but the show traffic and exhibitor excitement are at all times highs since 2001 in this writers opinion. Of course it is 8:47am and I did not leave The Lodge until 3:00am and no the memories are not even vague.

It’s day four, so I have declared “casual Friday” for the show. Stop by the booth check me out in a Tommy Bahama shirt and my cross trainers. Pants you say? You will have to come to the booth to see if I am wearing any!

Quick update on the photo above…one of my three big brothers (Kim) is in New York visiting his daughter and took this picture of Ground Zero yesterday. I found it was in my email inbox just after I made this post.

63-2GE Live: The Year of the Server

First, yes I was at The Lodge last night (well technically this morning) but my recollections of that part of the evening are vague at best. Epson had a great party right after the show attended by most of the color management community. Next, it was off to the Chromaticity Monday night football party. An excellent event as always. Finally before The Lodge I managed to end up at the ESKOArtwork party at the Excalibur night club. Apparently I am told I had quite a good time dancing with my good friend Shelly Hall (She did tell me there is no way she will get a Brewers tattoo on the other shoulder to match the Cubs tattoo from several years ago).

GraphExpo ‘07 is the year of the server from my perspective.  As the provider of a server based technology (ProofPass.com), I have been keeping my eyes on other server based offerings at the show.  Chromaticity released a new server appliance a the show which can be pre-loaded with several products which all work seamlessly together.   First ICS Remote Director can be hosted on the server.  Remote Director now has an API which has been integrated into many work flow tools so that a virtual proof is only a mouse click away.  The EFI ColorProof client server remote proofing solution can also be hosted on the same server, making the appliance very versatile. Who knows they might even be able to host the ProofPass.com hard copy and virtual proof verification server on the same box!

More to come…..

63-1 GE Live: This Is Not Your Father’s GCR

A growing new software category: I ran into my friend John Sweeney who is now the Director of Business Development for IQ Colour.  John gave the 60-second sales pitch as only he can do, and the bullet points which follow sum it it pretty well;

  • Key is controls moving upstream
  • autmated, color managed workflow
  • Trend to RGB workflow
  • convert to CMYK at last possible moment
  • plate making, cylinder engraving, screen making, etc…
  • single DAM, whatever the output

Alwan CMYK Optimizer: Is being represented by Dave Hunter  (Booth 4868) which is another product in this category and won a Must See ‘em honor for the show.

Both John and Dave stressed that this is not your father’s GCR.  Advances in Color Management and color space conversions have made the quality of the resulting file something we could have only dreamed about 20 years ago when GCR came to fame.

The 32% ink savings Dave showed me as an example was impressive.  He had print samples along to prove his point.  Even more impressive when the ink was pushed by about 10% the grey balance of the optimized image was fine while the conventional image did not look so hot.

The Show Overall: My sense is that show traffic is high and that the people at the show are buyers or at least serious lookers who will be buying.  This is good news for our industry!

If you missed me at “The Lodge” last night, it is because I never made it.  I think I must be getting old.  My awesome wife (also referred to by some as “Raffel’s Wife) joined me in Chicago Sat. evening, and after spending the whole evening eating and drinking too much with her and business associates I needed the night off.  (We did make it to “The Lodge” Sat evening, so I used that as my Lodge credit for Sun.)

#63: GraphExpo Expectations

GraphExpo Coverage: I want to let my readers know that starting September 9th I plan to blog live each day from the GraphExpo show floor (or my hotel room at 2am). This is a similar format to the IPA coverage I did back in May. Because I do not want to fill up your email inboxes, the posts will be available at JimRaffel.com. I will decide if I do this at future shows based on the traffic increase (if any) on the site during the show. In other words, my future show blogging is in the hands of you, my readers.

Every now and then I am going to write a light hearted Golden Nugget, and this is going to be one of them. I have made my list of customers that I really want to see (you know who you are, as I have been calling you non-stop this week to set-up appointments) I have checked it twice. None of them have been naughty; they are my customers after all, so they are all nice. (Well there is that one in central Michigan…).

I have booked my cheap hotel room. Cheap you say? Yes, when all I do is sleep there 4 hours a night and then use the shower, cheap is good. Four hours a night you say? Yes, up by 7am each day. On the show floor by 9 (we exhibitors need time to set things up each morning). I spend all day on my feet in the booth and at meetings outside the booth. This is why bringing two really comfortable pair of shoes and alternating them between days is critical. (Don’t forget your cross trainers for at night or you will not be able to stand in the morning). Does it sound fun yet? Well, I love it!

Next thing I know it is 3pm and I realize I have eaten nothing since the free breakfast in the hotel lobby. I probably will get nothing to eat until the vendor party (free hors de oeuvres) that I have managed to secure an invitation to, but that doesn’t start for 2-3 more hours. (Way too busy with double booked appointments and unexpected visitors to the booth.) My pocket is full of business cards and lead slips, and being this busy at a show is the best feeling in the world. I love it!

Five pm rolls around and all the exhibitors clap. You wonder why? Go back and read the last couple paragraphs. We head out to a vendor party, the Hyatt bar, or a dinner appointment with a great or potentially great customer. I say great customer because eating out for a week in Chicago could just about put my daughter through school for a semester! By 9 or 10pm I make a quick stop at the room to put on my jeans and those cross trainers I mentioned (they are critical now because I will be on my feet many more hours). I love it!

At this point I head to yet another vendor party at some swanky downtown nightclub to network with yet another group of business associates or customers. At whatever point this next event winds down, my best group of business buddies and I (going back 20 years now) can be found at “The Lodge.” Please come visit us one night during the show. Just ask the cab drive to take you to “The Lodge” which is on the corner of Rush and Division Streets. We can be found here by about 1am, and normally, at least some of us are still there at 3am. I love it!

Groundhog day: Now, just circle back a few paragraphs to the one about my cheap hotel. Is it all starting to make sense? GraphExpo at four nights is not so bad. During a Print show it really begins to feel like the movie Ground Hog Day. But you know what? I love Graph Expo, I really love it!
